Building the Grid from the Bottom

Two key elements of grid modernization are the Advanced Distribution Automation Systems (ADAS) and Local Energy Systems. In the past microgrids has been extensively featured and how they contributed to shape the future grid. Microgrids are originally seen as mainly electrical in contrast to this the recent development froms Europe feature the Local Energy Systems which differ from Microgrids in dimensions of size and also the integration of cross-carrier energy system. The resulting system is not anymore an electrical system but a multicarrier system. The LES perspective will cover on how the role of distributed generation evolved in European DSO and how assets where moved to lower voltage level. This change impacts not only the location of the assets and the distribution of energy but also on the requirements and functionalities which the distribution automation system needs to fulfill. An industry consensus is that around 75% of the cost of ADAS implementation is integration into the existing landscape of operation technologies. Successful interoperability requires compliance with industry standards, Communication protocols and data exchange.

The panel session will focus on how ADAS and LES contribute to grid modernization and the importance of integration and interoperability from the utility side. There will be several examples discussed resulting from the experiences gained in several large-scale European demonstration projects. A focus will be placed on what are the commonalities and differences between Europe and Asia. Especially dealing with the opportunities and challenges of LES and Advanced Automation solutions.

Panel 15: Power Plant Digitalization

The digital transformation is coming to the power industry. Data collection and exchange are growing exponentially, creating digital threats but also valuable opportunities. Utilities around the world are leveraging digital technologies to enhance efficiency and optimize production.

Power plant digitalization leverages a large number of digital applications across the utility production value chain. A digital application is a combination of multiple technologies addressing a specific business requirement. For example, predictive maintenance, which is a combination of technologies such as IIoT, Big data, and artificial intelligence, is a popular digital application to improve productivity and reliability by minimizing unplanned downtime.

Digital utility plants lead to holistic improvement in the production process. Utility players expect digital plants to make production processes more efficient and reliable by massively improving crucial areas of production in the next five years. This represents a step change in performance improvement. These improvements in operations will be driven by a wide array of digital applications, with more than half using process automation and close to half using operational analytics. While process automation encompasses features such as automated material handling and smart track and trace, operational analytics turns data at the level of automation control systems into insightful information that is visible to authorized people in the organization. The power plant of the future will be fully digitalization. This session is going to address successful transformation from the manufacturer point of view to the utility concerns.
